The sector is currently structuring itself: architects and engineers, be the pioneers of a controlled, sustainable, and inspiring reuse.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Stone Reuse: A Lever to Mitigate Climate Change<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">Stone is omnipresent on Parisian fa\u00e7ades, particularly in the form of thin stone cladding, which has been very common in construction since the 1970s. During renovations or changes of use, the question of the future of these materials arises. Reuse\u2014which consists of dismantling, machining, and reinstalling the stone\u2014stands out as a relevant solution to limit waste and the environmental impact of the building sector. Thanks to its physical and mechanical stability over time, stone is particularly well-suited to this approach.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">Approximately 22% of CO\u2082 emissions linked to stone come from quarry extraction. Reusing material already extracted in the past therefore significantly reduces environmental impact. Furthermore, transport distances to processing centers are often shorter than those to quarries, further decreasing emissions. Transport: A Decisive Factor<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The RE2020 regulation considers that reused materials have zero impact in terms of Global Warming Potential (3). This assertion is intended to favor and encourage the development of the sector and is taken into account in calculations performed by ecale.io, the parametric fa\u00e7ade evaluation tool developed by Arcora.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3849\" src=\"https:\/\/arcora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Ecale.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arcora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Ecale.png 2082w, https:\/\/arcora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Ecale-2000x960.png 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, a more in-depth analysis reveals that transport can become the main emission source, depending on the distance. The graph above offers an impact analysis of three compared scenarios:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\"><b>Distant Reuse:<\/b> Machining at 1,500 km (e.g., Paris \u2192 Portugal)<\/li>\n<li data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\"><b>Local Reuse:<\/b> Machining at 16 km<\/li>\n<li data-path-to-node=\"10,2,0\"><b>New Product:<\/b> Quarry at 466 km<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Result:<\/b> Distant reuse generates a carbon impact 6 times higher than local reuse, and 2 times higher than using new stone. The location of stone transformation and machining workshops is therefore crucial<\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Toward a Unified Method for Impact Assessment<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The <i>Booster du R\u00e9emploi<\/i> offers a carbon calculator based on averaged environmental data (4), useful for estimating orders of magnitude of global warming impacts and guiding choices upstream of design. It proposes analyzing avoided emissions according to the calculation method illustrated below:<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_3851\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3851\" style=\"width: 1085px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3851\" src=\"https:\/\/arcora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Calcul.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1085\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arcora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Calcul.png 4700w, https:\/\/arcora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Calcul-2000x873.png 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1085px) 100vw, 1085px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3851\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>[Figure 2: Booster du R\u00e9emploi calculation method for in-situ material reuse]<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>Avoided emissions correspond to those generated by the end-of-life of the reused product (Modules C1-C4, building A) and those of its production (Modules A1-A3, building A\u2019), based on environmental data averages.<\/p>\n<p>The Arcora approach consists of analyzing the total cradle-to-grave impact (ImpactR) of the reused product based on environmental data chosen and adapted to transport conditions (Modules A2R and A4R) and the type of reconditioning required (Module A3R). Thus, the impact of reuse is defined as follows :<\/p>\n<p><em>Impact<sub>R<\/sub>\u2008= Module\u2008A2<sub>R<\/sub>\u2008+ Module\u2008A3<sub>R <\/sub>+ Module\u2008A4<sub>R<\/sub>\u2008+\u2008Modules\u2008A5\u2008\u00e0\u2008C4<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The comparison between these two approaches has also highlighted a divergence in how the weight of the reused element, which is directly correlated to transport, is taken into account.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Securing Reuse from the Design Phase<\/h3>\n<p>In-situ reuse requires a rigorous approach from the design phases. It is essential to identify homogeneous batches of stone slabs and calibrate the number of tests accordingly to avoid additional costs or interpretation errors. A simplified protocol allows for the management of risks related to scheduling, costs, and innovation.<\/p>\n<h3><b>5. A Developing Sector<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The reuse of thin stone is an emerging practice in 2025. To date, this reuse remains an innovative technique requiring the development of adapted, precise, and project-relevant protocols. Several projects by Arcora and its peers have already helped overcome certain technical and regulatory barriers, and professional recommendation guides are paving the way (5). Feedback will allow the sector to be structured, similar to the steel sector (6), where professional rules facilitate reuse by reducing insurance and legal risks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes :\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>1) To perform the calculation, the reference used is Combe Brune limestone for the quarry location and density (2320 kg\/m\u00b3). As the most common thickness of stone slabs is 3 cm, this was taken as the reference for calculating weight per square meter (69.6 kg\/m\u00b2).<\/li>\n<li>The FDES INIES sheets used for the calculation are Sheet 35002 and 5555.
